In the fall of , I was anxiously awaiting the premiere of a new reality show based on the idea of arranged marriage. There were a lot of postings on this topic from ew. The new reality show has the potential to open up an alternative way to think about marriage in the U. What I would like to explore in this column is how we currently define and think of the representation of arranged marriages in the context of Indian arranged marriages and matchmaking on American television. When arranged marriage appears on American television, it usually is represented as a practice that is antithetical to romantic love in the U.

Comedies such as The Office and The Simpsons emphasize the foreign nature of a practice associated with Indians who are also Hindus. There are many variations in the expression of arranged marriage but most television narratives related to South Asians I discuss this further in my longer project on South Asians in American Popular culture tend to focus on three aspects, first, the match and marriage is set up by the family and is not an individual choice, second, there is no love in arranged matches, and thirdly, your partner is a stranger.

Thus arranged marriages are shown as something to escape or an irrational cultural practice that the individual can leave behind rather than recognition that arranged marriages are a viable and successful means of marriage. So the participation and adoption of alternative ideas of marriage such as employing practices associated with Indian arranged marriage, for example, is viewed as an individual choice rather than an indication that there might be a more complex system or problems within the system that influence U.

The proliferation of reality dating shows and dating clubs that include the family in the show and televise the different choices involved in selecting a partner present a convergence of Indian American and American cultural practices.

But before the eight-episode series surprised the world, Indian television had already been there and done that. Long before the world woke up to the charm of Sima Taparia and her superpower of finding a suitable match for marriage, Madhuri Dixit had done the same job.

Unlike the Netflix series, the probable bride and groom were completely desi. Also, while at it, Dixit had a fun time interacting with these youngsters, who were serious about finding a match rather than being starstruck by the actor.

Follow Us. Over reality TV? The first episode of Netflix ‘s newest dating reality show starts with a straight white guy getting off his motorcycle and walking into a restaurant for a blind date, while a voiceover from his friends describes him briefly. Two things become clear immediately—this is a whole different planet from the likes of The Bachelor, and that they couldn’t have picked a more bland guy to be the suitor in the pilot if you want our opinion, just start watching from the second episode.

Dating Around takes a while to hook you, mostly because it’s refreshingly free from the usual reality dating show tropes like an over eloquent host, a narrator or heightened drama. The six-episode series follows the same format—a suitor goes on five blind dates and then chooses one of them to go on a second date with. At this point, like the suitor and his or her dates, we don’t know anything about any of the dates. Each episode is nearly minute long, tightly-edited, and divided into sections including drinks, dinner, and the after-hours, where we slowly get to find out more about the dates and the eligible suitor, as if we were on the blind date too.

The five dates happen concurrently, with the suitor dressed in the same outfit so that we, as viewers, can easily make the transition between the different dates. The USP of the Netflix’s Dating Around lies in the pared-down style of narrative, where the simplicity of the set-up makes the dates feel more intimate and less produced. The editing plays an important role in helping us understand what’s going on in each person’s minds without a continuous stream of confessional interviews running parallel to the date as well.

The show also offers a brief look into these people’s lives, people who belong to different races, backgrounds, age groups, and sexual orientations, and there’s something for everyone to identify with. While all this seems like the detoxification we need from the onslaught of shows like The Bachelor and its many, many iterations, or high-on-drama shows like Temptation Island, Dating Around can get vaguely boring at times.

Make no mistake, there is drama here, but you’ll be forgiven to expect a few catfights or shocking cliffhangers, because what’s a reality show without tears and curses?

It might seem strange to invoke an Alice Walker essay in connection with the new Netflix reality series, Indian Matchmaking , but, here we go. The essay is revolutionary for that coinage. Walker explicitly draws a connection between skin color and marriage. Walker tells us two smaller, adjoining stories, about herself and a friend in their single days. In the Netflix series Indian Matchmaking , the importance of skin color arrives quickly in talk of matrimony, as do other facets of packaged appearance, the sorts that indicate a notion of a stratified universe: This level of education matches with this one, this shade of skin with this, this height with this, these family values with these, this caste with this, this region with this, and so on.

In the series, she takes on clients in India and America, young desi men and women who seem, for all their desire to get properly paired off, equally conflicted about the whole endeavor. The women work and travel; they like their lives and have friends who offer the sort of support a spouse might. All seem to want, at some level, simple, non-transactional, unconditional affection.

At the same time, they talk in transactional terms. The series leaves us with a somewhat haunting vision, an echo of a refrain repeated throughout the show, but one that lands louder with our final subject. Richa is the child of immigrants to America and speaks with a generic American flatness.

These men and women — or boys and girls, as they are referred to in Indian society, perhaps to reinforce their youth and innocence — of Indian origin are in their 20s and 30s, living in India and the US. Credit: Netflix. Indian Matchmaking just takes this concept further. Of course, each of these comes with their own good, bad and ugly. I think the entire experience felt like going on a journey with no idea as to what could turn up next.

There have always been matchmakers and, more recently, marriage agencies that connected families. And every Indian family has a Sima Mami who offers women unsolicited, and often blunt, advice to wear more make-up, or hit the gym to lose weight, if they ever hope to get married. Despite this sociocultural context, Indian Matchmaking has generated a lot of outrage, with critics and viewers alike accusing the show of playing up — or, at the very least, not critiquing — everything regressive in Indian society.

Words like hate-watch and cringe-fest have regularly featured on social media.
